Regional Areas
The topographic section of this atlas is presented in a series of regional maps of varying scales. A common map scale was not possible due to the wide variety of detail in the South Australian landscape.
Names used to identify regions are those in popular use although their precise boundaries are subject to disagreement. Each regional map is drawn with a slight degree of overlap with its adjacent regions. Three regions, Barossa, Riverland and Flinders Ranges, are 'embedded' within larger regions and are given large scale representation due to their diversity of landscape and popularity as tourist destinations.
Population data are from the 1981 census. Figures for urban settlements refer to the Australian Bureau of Statistics' definition of 'urban centres' or 'bounded rural localities'. The data on estimated value of farm production were supplied by the Bureau and relate to the year ending in March 1982, a year of higher than average rainfall throughout most of the settled districts.
