Frequently Asked Questions
What Map Projection does the Atlas use?
The coordinates shown on the Atlas use the Lambert Conformal Conic (LCC) projection; the map units are meters.
The Atlas uses the South Australian Government standard LCC parameters. The parameters are as follows:
| Datum | GDA94 (GRS80 Spheroid) |
|---|---|
| First Standard Parallel | -28 0 0.000 |
| Second Standard Parallel | -36 0 0.000 |
| Central Meridian | 135 0 0.000 |
| Latitude of Projection's Origin | -32 0 0.000 |
| False Easting (metres) | 1 000 000 |
| False Northing (metres) | 2 000 000 |
All data available from the Atlas is based on the Geodectic Datum of Australia (GDA).
Why does my web browser need to accept cookies?
Cookies are simple text files stored on your web browser to provide a means of distinguishing among users of this website. The use of cookies is a standard practice among Internet websites. To better serve you, we use "session cookies" to enhance or customise your visit to this website. The session cookies that can be created automatically on the device you use to access the Atlas website, do not contain personal information and do not compromise your privacy or security. We may use the cookie feature to store a randomly generated identifying tag on the device you use to access this website. A session cookie is erased during operation of your browser.
If you use the "Remember Me" functionality when you login into the Atlas a cookie will be passed to your web browser. The purpose of this cookie is to automatically log you in when you come back to the Atlas website. This functionality saves you having to manually login each time you come back to the Atlas website. The details stored in this cookie are highly encrypted.
I get an error message saying "No Active Mapping Session Found". Can you please give me any clues?
This issue is related to the cookie settings in your web browser. When you start a new mapping session the Atlas' mapping application attempts to send you a identifier (in the form of a browser cookie). This cookie is the link between your web browser and your mapping session details (which layers you have turned on and your current map extent etc). Mapping sessions expire after 2 hours of inactivity.
If you are getting this message upon attempting to start a new mapping session it could mean that your browser is not accepting the cookie. With Internet Explorer 6 Microsoft introduced a different (tighter) form of cookie handling.
The Atlas website tells your browser what our privacy policy is, compares this to the security settings you have set in your browser's options, then either accepts or rejects the cookie. If the cookie is being rejected you may have to adjust your brower's privacy settings. In Internet Explorer 6, this can be done by clicking "View"-"Privacy Report..." from your browser's menu bar.
