An undulating to hilly plain on tillite and calcrete with numerous salt lakes and sand dunes. The plains and inland dunes have a cover of grassland or open parkland used for rotation cereal cultivation and livestock grazing. The coastal heaths and the low shrublands surrounding the salt lakes are used for livestock grazing, and some of the salt lakes are mined.
